What are Shares?
In financial markets, a share is one unit of various financial instruments including ordinary stocks or preferential stocks, and investments in limited partnerships, and REIT's. The common feature of all these is equity participation (limited in the case of preference shares).
The income received from shares is called a dividend, and a person owning shares is called a shareholder.
In Singapore shares are purchased or sold through the CDP (central Depository), but most would use a stock broker which is usually a company that is a stock broking firm who transacts with CDP.
Stock broking firms in Singapore must be member of the Singapore Stock Exchange, SGX, in order to transact share purchases for its customers and they are bound by the rules and regulations of SGX-ST, Singapore Stock Exchange, Securities Trading.
